Taking a Remote Online Bar Exam from Your Computer

January 28, 2021
In the September/October 2020 bar exam cycle, many bar exam takers took a remote online bar exam from their computer, whether at home or some other location. We now know that this is most likely not a one-time bar exam anomaly. We are again seeing that many states will be holding a remote bar exam for February 2021. As to after February, that decision will be state driven.

The September/October remote and online bar exam only administered half of the written exam. For instance, the UBE consisted only of 3 MEE essays and 1 MPT. The MBE was not given in any of the remote bar exams (which included Florida and California). Now, in February 2021, all the online bar exams will be fully administered – 6 essays, 2 MPTs for the UBE, and more importantly, the MBE exam will be given to all of the applicants.

For those who failed the September/October remote exam and for those who are taking the remote exam for the first time, you must prepare for an online exam and you must practice techniques that will help you succeed in February.

Here are some ideas to make sure you are successful in February.

1) The first thing to think about is the software issues. Is your computer ready for the software you must download? Most states are using Examsoft. Make sure you have the specifications necessary to download this software. Do this now so you will not be too stressed as you move closer to the bar exam. If necessary, you may have to buy or borrow someone’s computer.

2) Learn how your state will administer the remote bar exam. Will you have a split screen so that your essays appear on one side of your screen while you type out your answer on the other side of the screen? Will you have to scroll up and down or back and forth to write your essay? Can you highlight as you read the essays? These issues will be important so that you have an idea of what you are facing and to be able to practice with or without the tools you have. You must learn how to use these tools as you practice your essay writing.

3) You most likely will be without access to any scratch paper or note-taking as you read your essay. You must practice writing essays without scratch paper and instead use your computer as your scratch paper/note taking as you see the issues. You need to become proficient at outlining or organizing your essay answer on the computer as you work through the essay. You must practice your techniques and become adept in this skill.

This is just a start to prepare yourself for the essay portion of the bar exam. Once you figure out what your state’s software will entail, then you can begin practicing your essays in real time.

The MBE mean scaled score have been low for the past few bar cycles, especially for repeat takers. The February bar exam draws a larger proportion of takers who have already failed the exam at least once and who are statistically more likely to fail again than first-time takers. Test takers who have previously taken but not passed a bar exam tend to show lower performance on the MBE than first-time test takers, and the majority of this February’s test takers nationwide were repeat takers. Our Bar Professors’ MBE book will help you pass. The MBE book is concise and gives you the need to know areas to concentrate your studies. We also provide tutorial services.
